Temps and Time Dropping at Detweiller

Saturday, September 14 2013 - Peoria Woodruff Cross Country Invite

September 14, 2013, PEORIA, IL- 54 degrees at the start of the girls race felt a lot cooler than the 81 at race time last week, and the times dropped even further than the temperatures. Leading the way with the race-of-the-day was Autumn Kridner. Autumn was the only girl to get all three splits under 8:00 as she went 7:52-7:51-7:56 en route to a season PR of 23:47. She was our #3 for the day as Vera Rosenberger moved up to our #1 to lead the team with her 23:17 and Karly Miller dropped nearly three minutes from a week ago with her 23:25. Our #4 was Kathy Mudd who crossed in 23:56, and rounding out our scorers was Rachael Ingalsbe, who improved to 24:26 for the season. While our team place was not what we had hoped (43rd of 48, 1189 points), our goal was to get our team average at our below 24:24, and we ran a 23:46 average, dropping our average from the previous week by over one minute and closing our pack time from 2:41 to 1:09. We were also within 26 seconds of having all of our top five under 24.

On the guys side, we came one person short of meeting our four team goals for the race (1. Run smart, 2. Season PR, 3. Average under 17, 4. Top seven under 18). Everyone ran a smart race, our team average dipped below 17 (16:51), and our 7

th man finished in 17:44. Leading the way for the Titans was Jacob Ludy, who after an impressive mile-repeat on Thrusday followed by some heavy lifting, still managed to get out in 5:12 and hang on for a 16:23. He was followed by fellow senior, Tyler DeMarb, who improved by 45 seconds from his NCHS time for a 16:31. Ludy and Demarb are now the #1 and #2 Titans of all time on the Detweiller course. Our #3 today was Hunter Cobbley, who dropped almost a full 60 seconds from the previous week and broke 17 for the first time ever with his 16:51. With three guys under our goal average of 17:00, our #4 and #5 simply needed to be near 17:00 to keep our average under. Charging up the incline to take EPG’s #4 spot was last week’s #6, Ryan Filkins, who had a great last half mile to finish in 17:13, a lifetime PR. Right behind him was Freshman Andy Layden, crossing in 17:16 and guaranteeing a team average under 17. From there we still had to get our #6 and #7 in under 18 to meet our fourth goal. Luke Barnard was a mere two seconds back of Adam Ludy at the 2.5 mark and as he passed he encouraged the younger Ludy to follow him home. Luke continued to hammer up the hill, finishing in 17:38, and Adam was right behind in 17:44. Our top seven all finished under what our #2 did last year.

But the great finishes don’t stop there. Our #8, #9, and #10 all finished within 10 seconds of each other as Shelby Heffron (18:46), Marc Hartness (18:47) and Brandon Stine (18:54) all had season PRs (Heffron and Stine had lifetime PRs). Nathaniel Schug took exactly one minute off last week’s time with his 19:40. Quinn Killian dropped 30 seconds for a 20:24. Enrique Sanchez dropped 80 seconds for a 21:28. Sam Poppen ran a season-PR 23:32, and Waite Uphoff took off time instead of his jersey this week, finishing 27-seconds ahead of last week in 25:04.

We have a very busy week of running this week. We have to run three meets (at Prairie Central on Tuesday, at Princeville on Thursday, at Bureau Valley on Saturday). We also have to help out at the Junior High Invitational on Monday. Because of the three-meet week, we are cancelling our usual Monday-Morning Tempo Run. You should use Monday morning to get in your long run because otherwise you will have to get it in after the JH Invite (you will get your long run in on Monday, see me if you don’t know how long it should be). We will have recovery workouts on Wednesday and Friday, both involving lifting and hurdle mobility. Nice job to all runners at the meet today, everyone looked good.
