CHICAGO – Indiana State captured its first men's and women's indoor track and field conference titles since 2015 Monday, as the Sycamores swept both MVC Championships at Gately Park.
The Sycamore men finished with 171 points, beating second-place Illinois State by seven. ISU's women finished with 132 points, defeating four-time defending champion Illinois State by 15.
"This team has overcome so many challenges the last two years," Indiana State Program Director and Head Coach Angela Martin said. "I am so proud of them. We preach attitude and effort. We said we were going to come home with two trophies and we didn't say which ones. They went out, believed in our goals and had fun."
Indiana State won five events on the day, while scoring points in nearly event of the final day. Ryann Porter and Shomari Rogers-Walton swept the triple jump titles, with the Sycamores also getting wins from JaVaughn Moore in the 60m, Jocelyn Quiles in the mile and Lawrence Mitchell in the high jump.
"The competitive resilience instilled into these women and men comes from Coach Angie Martin," Director of Athletics Sherard Clinkscales said. "To take the mantle of a storied program under the toughest circumstances and then to support our student-athletes through social injustice and COVID is a testament to Angie and her staff."
Porter was named the MVC Women's Most Valuable Athlete and also earned Freshman of the Year. Sycamore Program and Head Coach Angela Martin was named the MVC Men's and Women's Indoor Coach of the Year, while Associate Head Coach Jeff Martin was named the MVC Men's and Women's Indoor Assistant Coach of the Year.

Sprints/Hurdles
Indiana State produced one sprints win and five all-conference honorees on the final day of the championships. JaVaughn Moore continued his dominant season with his third straight MVC title in the 60, running a 6.69 in the finals. Noah Malone (6.79) and Jarel Shaw (6.82) placed fourth and fifth for Indiana State, earning valuable points for the Sycamores.
Ryann Porter set a personal record in her first of two events Monday, placing second in the 60m hurdles with a time of 8.62. Iyanla Hunter joined Porter as Sycamore women's sprinters/hurdlers to earn all-conference recognition Monday with a career-best 55.81 in the 400m to place third.
Indiana State had a pair of scorers in the men's 400m, with Tahj Johnson placing third at 48.64 to earn all-conference honors. Cameron Stevens ran a time of 49.35 to finish fifth.
Both of Indiana State's relay teams competing Monday earned all-conference honors. The women's 4x400m team of Sierra Long, Reynei Wallace, Riley Tuerff and Hunter ran a season-best 3:50.55 to place third, while the men's 4x400 team of Stevens, Mitchell Cline, Ben Shepard and Johnson ran a 3:16.31 to finish third.
Wallace placed fifth in the women's 200m at 24.74, while Daryl Black (8.24) and Quincy Armstrong (8.27) placed sixth and seventh in the men's 60m hurdles, respectively.
Mid/Distance
Jocelyn Quiles got the day started for the Sycamores with a win in the mile, setting a new Gately Park record of 4:45.89 in the process. Quiles followed that up with an all-conference performance in the 3000m, placing third in 9:32.50.
Cale Kilian and Wyatt Wyman also earned all-conference honors in the mile and 800m, respectively. Kilian ran a 4:08.52 in the mile, with Wyman running a 1:50.40 in the 800m as both Sycamores placed third in their events.
Indiana State also got points from Napoleon Hernandez in the 800m, as he placed seventh at 1:53.35. Ethan Breen and Jackson Krieg also scored in the mile for Indiana State, just a day after both ran in the distance medley relay. Breen finished in fourth at 4:11.42, while Krieg was seventh with a time of 4:12.86.
Logan Pietzrak earned a top-10 finish in the men's 3000m, the final distance event of the championships, as he finished in 8:24.32.
Jumps
The Sycamores' success in the jumps events continued into Monday, as Indiana State won three of the four on Day Two. Indiana State went 1-2 in both the men's high jump and men's triple jump, while also earning two all-conference honorees in the women's triple jump.
Lawrence Mitchell and Kevin Krutsch both cleared 2.09m (6-10.25) in the men's high jump, with Mitchell taking the title based on attempts at previous heights as the tiebreaker. Nathan Kiger cleared 2.03m (6-08.00) to place fifth in the event.
Competing in the triple jump for the first time in over a month, Shomari Rogers-Walton took home the title in his first championships with a top mark of 15.03m (49-03.75). Dearis Herron followed right behind in second at 14.91m (48-11.00) to earn all-conference honors, while Mitch Conard placed eighth with a jump of 13.47m (44-02.50) to get on the board for the Trees.
Porter continued her top-notch performance at the championships with her second win of the meet in the triple jump, posting the only mark above 12 meters in the event (12.58m/41-03.25). Dominique Wood earned a third-place finish and a spot on the all-conference team with a jump of 11.65m (38-02.75), while Brittney Walker placed sixth at 11.60m (38-00.75).
Kelsey Bowlds added three points for the Sycamores in the women's high jump after clearing 1.66m (5-05.25), while Marisa Marshall narrowly missed out on scoring points with a ninth-place finish (1.61m/5-03.25).
Throws
Indiana State had six throwers earn points on the final day of competition, including four in the men's shot put. Wyatt Puff and Brett Norton both earned top-five finishes, placing fourth and fifth with throws of 17.57m (57-07.75) and 17.47m (57-03.75), respectively. Noah Bolt (16.20m/53-01.75) and Elias Foor (15.99m/52-05.50) also got on the scoreboard for the Sycamores with seventh and eighth-place finishes.
Jayla Bynum picked a good time to set a personal record in the shot put, recording a throw of 15.27m (50-01.25) to place fourth. Hannah Redlin also scored for Indiana State with a throw of 13.80m (45-03.50), finishing in eighth.
