Sycamores Shine in Second Meet of Outdoor Season

CHARLESTON, Ill. – Indiana State track and field put on a dominant display Friday at the EIU Big Blue Classic, winning 20 of the 28 events it competed in.
The 20 Sycamore event wins were won by 20 different athletes. In addition to the event wins, the Sycamores finished the meet with 44 top-three finishes and 63 top-five finishes. The wins were split across the board, as Indiana State won in six sprints and hurdles events, three distance events, five jumps events and six throws events.
Jocelyn Quiles had the top result of the meet for Indiana State, shattering her personal record in the 5000m by more than 30 seconds on her way to the second-best outdoor time in school history at 16:31.47.

Top-Three Finishes
Sprints/Hurdles
Noah Malone had arguably the best result among the Sycamore sprinters in his outdoor debut. A week after competing on the Paralympic stage in Dubai, Malone clocked a 10.56 in the 100m to set a new personal record and take first place. The time also ranks first in the Valley. Jarel Shaw, who owned the previous top time in the Valley, also earned a top-five finish in the event, placing fourth at 10.81. In the women's 100m, Mirlege Castor placed second in her outdoor season debut at 12.30 seconds, while Saadiya Mitchell also earned a top-five finish with a time of 12.97.
Shaw also earned a first-place finish Friday, winning the 200m with a time of 22.24. Teammate Ejiroghene Biokoro almost made it a 1-2 finish in the event for the Sycamores, coming in third with a time of 22.42. On the women's side, Kamille Gaskin-Griffith made it a sweep of the 200m titles for the Trees, placing first in 25.42 seconds. Riley Tuerff gave the Sycamores another top-three finisher in the event, crossing the line in 25.91.
Indiana State swept the podium in the women's 400m, with Iyanla Hunter leading the way for the Sycamores. Hunter finished in 57.08 seconds, while Sierra Long and Reynei Wallace had times of 59.22 and 59.95 to finish second and third, respectively. On the men's side, Tahj Johnson won the 400m with a time of 48.20, while Cameron Stevens finished third at 49.39. Wyatt Wyman also earned a top-five finish with a sub-50 second time in the event.
In the hurdles events, it was Daryl Black taking top honors with a first-place finish in the 110m hurdles. Black clocked a time of 14.64, with fellow Sycamore Luigi Rivas coming in third at 14.99. Quincy Armstrong had a second-place finish in the men's 400m hurdles at 54.55, while Bryce Byrdsong (110m), Caine Wilson (400m) and Mitchell Cline (400m) all earned top-five hurdles finishes for the Sycamore men. For the Indiana State women, Ryann Porter (14.49), Tuerff (14.93) and Gaskin-Griffith (15.00) finished third, fourth and fifth in the 100m hurdles, respectively.
The Sycamores also ran in the women's 4x100m relay for the first time this season, with Castor, Daija Springer, Hunter and Wallace teaming up to place second with a time of 47.95.
Mid/Distance
Jocelyn Quiles led nearly wire-to-wire in the women's 5000m, earning a first-place finish in the event while also posting the second-best outdoor time in school history in the event at 16:31.47. The mark was also more than 30 seconds better than her previous personal record. Maggie Falater also broke her PR by more than 30 seconds on her way to a fourth-place finish at 18:25.77.
In the men's 5000m, all five Sycamores in the event set new personal records. Logan Pietzrak won the event at 14:29.34, with Cale Kilian coming right behind him in second place at 14:30.45. Jackson Krieg (14:37.37) also finished in the top five for the Trees, while Ethan Breen (14:54.19) and Jason Dworak (14:55.43) earned top-10 marks for the Sycamores.
Cassidy Bagby made a late charge in the women's 1500m, passing multiple competitors on the final lap to earn a first-place finish with a career-best time of 4:55.62. Napoleon Hernandez was the lone Sycamore in the men's 1500m, placing sixth with a time of 4:04.97.
Devon Zeck also set a personal record Friday, running a time of 2:22.20 in the 800m to place second in the event.
Jumps/Pole Vault
Indiana State placed first in five of the six jumps events it competed in Friday, including event sweeps of the high jump and pole vault.
Brittney Walker led the way in the long jump, as Indiana State had each of the top five competitors in the event. Walker had a mark of 5.49m (18-00.25), and was followed by Dominique Wood (5.41m/17-09.00), Faith Frye (5.31m/17-05.25), Porter (5.30m/17-04.75) and Aliyah Schwenk (5.26m/17-03.25) to sweep the top five spots. Frankie Young (7.14m/23-05.25) earned a second-place finish in the men's long jump, with Mitch Conard (6.97m/22-10.50) also earning a top-five finish.
The Sycamores earned 1-2 finishes in both pole vault events, with William Staggs (4.70m/15-05.00) and Landis Brandon (3.65m/11-11.75) winning the men's and women's events, respectively. Callan Whitehouse cleared 4.40m (14-05.25) to place second on the men's side, with Brooklyn Giertz (3.65m/11.75) and Maddie Welsh (3.50m/11-05.75) finishing in the top three on the women's side.
Indiana State earned a 1-2 finish in the men's long jump, with both Lawrence Mitchell and Kevin Krutsch clearing 2.05m (6-08.75). Mitchell earned the first-place finish for the Trees, with Eva Grace Quinlan clearing 1.67m (5-05.75) to finish first on the women's side for the Sycamores. Marisa Marshall and Kelsey Bowlds both cleared 1.58m (5-02.25) to finish in a tie for third.
Throws
Elias Foor began the meet for the Trees with a third-place finish in the hammer throw at 52.96m (173-09). Ryan Golliher (50.98m/167-03) and Brandon Peck (50.75/166-06) also earned top-five finishes for the Sycamores, who placed first in every other throws event Friday. Foor and Elijah Grider placed 1-2 in the javelin, with Foor's mark of 50.38m (165-03) earning first place and Grider placing second at 44.71m (146-08)
In her javelin debut, Giertz was the only competitor to top 40 meters in the event with a throw of 40.07m (131-05) to place first. Gaskin-Griffith also earned a top-five spot, placing fourth at 30.54m (100-02).
Jayla Bynum also won her event by a wide margin, finishing as the only competitor in the women's shot put field with a mark over 14 meters. Bynum's best throw of 14.30m (46-11.00) was nearly two meters better than anyone else in the field. On the men's side, Brett Norton won the event with a top mark of 16.80m (55-01.50), with Golliher earning his second top-five finish of the meet with a throw of 14.54m (47-08.50).
The Sycamores also swept the discus titles, with Wyatt Puff (51.46m/168-10) winning on the men's side and Hannah Redlin (45.78m/150-02) earning the top mark on the women's side. Noah Bolt (49.11m/161-01) and Norton (47.12m/154-07) also earned top-five finishes for the ISU men.

Indiana State had five distance runners take part in the men's and women's 10,000m at the WashU Distance Carnival.
Erica Barker and Chloe Loftus earned top-20 spots on the women's side, with Barker placing 18th at 37:21.43 and Loftus finishing 19th at 37:34.87. On the men's side, Cael Light was the top finisher in 24th with a time of 31:01.22.
