Here are some brief thoughts on a few of the highlights from Saturday’s meet at Proviso West.
The highlight of shorter races came from Joe Ehrhart in the 55H, after having to run the race by himself due to being impeded in his prelim, Joe ran a lifetime PR in the 55 hurdles of 9.20 which is .74 improvement from his first race of the year at LWC and almost a full second improvement from what Joe ran last year at Proviso to end his indoor campaign. Great job Joe.
Jamir Hunt was able to win his heat of the 200 running 24.08, just off his PR he set a week ago. Jamir hit his top end right when he needed to and ran away from the rest of his heat. A very sound tactical race from Jamir. Jamir is getting consistently better, when we were at Proviso in February he ran 24.85, now he is almost a full second faster.
James Sullivan race a very tactically sound race in the 800, he opened in 30 seconds for his first 200, then ran another 30 second 200 and came back strong to run 2:08 for an indoor PR and just 2 seconds off his outdoor PR he set last year at Glenbard West. As James continues to build his speed endurance he will be a force to be reckoned with in the 800.
The mile produced two PRs. Noah Healy ran an all-time PR of 4:34. Last year at Proviso Noah ran 4:44 at this meet. If he can continue to be 10 seconds fast than he ran at last year’s meets we can see him dipping into the low 4:20s by the end of the year. Kyle Bechtold ran an indoor PR of 4:47, a time that is only 3 seconds off his outdoor PR that he ran at Sectionals last year. Kyle was very aggressive in his race, he went straight to the front and lead through 800, as he continues to build speed endurance he can start to look at times in the low 4:30s. Nice race by both of those milers.
In highlight of the day on the distance side might well have been Mike Trost’s 3200. He ran 10:16 basically by himself, as the top group separated from him at 400 meters and he ran all alone, as he consistently clicked off 76-77s all the way around for a huge PR, and an indoor all time #3 at LWN. Only John Chomiak and Ian Mayster have run faster. Mike has shown some great range this indoor season with a 56.xx split in the 4x4 as well as the 10:16. Could the 3200 be Mike’s best event? Only time will tell.
The 4x8 set a school record of 8:22.9. The best part of the race was that they got the victory. Glenbard South opened a sizeable lead after the first leg but Noah and Robbie were able to keep mentally focused and slowly closed the gap as Demetri took the stick for the anchor leg. Running through some IT pain Demetri was able to hang on for the victory. This was our 7th outright or tie of an indoor school record this indoor season.
In the field events there were a few notable performances. Herb Dawson made his debut in the long jump, and looked very comfortable. He only got one good jump in (17’6”) but had two that he just missed (less than an inch) the board. The third attempt looked to be well over 18 feet. I think with some more technical work Herb can start to do some great things in the long jump.
Jimmy Moustis has a massive PR in the triple jump, his last attempt of the day was nearly a 2 foot PR. Jimmy will crack the 30 foot barrier this outdoor season for sure. Nice job by Jimmy.
Over all it was a great day by the Phoenix.
