As a program we want our only home invitational to be every athlete’s favorite meet of the year. I hope every athlete and spectator had a great time on Thursday at the Stephen P Hunt. A big shout out to all the people who helped to make that happen.
As far as the Wildcats who competed both on the track and field we had some great performances. Leading the way with a double PR and two second place finishes was Christian Martin. Christian has been putting together some great work at practice and it hasn’t converted to meets, until Thursday when we threw a 69cm PR in the shot and a 2.91m PR in the discus. Christian wasn’t the only field athlete with a big PR and a 2nd place finish, Kedan Strickland jumped a 25cm PR in the long jump. Bryan Underwood wanted to join the trend of a PR and a 2nd place finish, as he closed very well in the 300Hs to run a 1.06 second PR to finish 2nd.
The young jumps crew came away with some solid PRs on the night, Curterry Clark had a nice little PR in the long jump. Frank Gibson had a 42cm PR in the triple jump. Noah Trenter had a strong nearly half a meter PR in the long jump.
The distance crew had some monster races, unfortunately when your in-district rivals finished 1st and 4th in the state in XC finishing at the top of the podium can be a challenge. The race of the night was the 1600 where the top 4 athletes all broke the meet record, Tyler Schick hung with the pack as long as he could and it helped him to break 4:30 for the first time (4:29.88). Arnold Arce put in a great effort in that same race after he ran a PR early in the night in the 800 which saw the meet record broken by multiple people as well. In that 1600, Luke Adair broke 4:50 for the first time, pretty impressive for Luke after 18 months ago he couldn’t break 24 minutes for 3 miles in cross country, that’s all hard work from Luke! Raymond Churchill may have had the most impressive PR on the night running a 12 second PR in the 800 (2:25->2:13). Raymond just out kicked Ubaldo Rodriguez who also PRd in the 800. In the 4x800 Jake Michel ran a PR and then came back and joined Luke Adair, Tyler Schick, Gavin Schnowske, and Arnold Arce running PRs in the 4x400. In the open mile Aden Veljacic ran a strong PR!
The sprints saw sone great races too, Gavin Schnowske ran over a 1 second PR in the 400 to finish 5th and then came back and ran the best leg on the 4x400 (52.4). Sweet T, Torrance Freeman ran a PR in the 100 (11.61). Will Dotson ran a PR leg in the 4x200 as did Malik Jassim and Christian Crowder. In the open 200 Danny Haberkamp and Christian Ndegoe also ran big PRs.
The Wildcats are back in action twice this week at Romeoville Tuesday and then at The Bill Jackson Invitational next Friday before we great up for the SPC Championship.
