TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Sycamore Cross Country has revealed its schedule for the upcoming 2022 season, Indiana State Track and Field & Cross Country Program Director Angela Martin announced Wednesday
"The luxury of being in the Midwest is that we have tremendous competition each week," Martin noted. "I think our schedule is set for our teams to be challenged early yet perform their best at the end of the season on the LaVern Gibson Championships Cross Country Course. I hope that our alumni and fans come out to support us as we host three meets this season including both the Missouri Valley Championships and NCAA Great Lakes Regionals."
ISU returns several pieces from last season's roster and will look to capitalize on the momentum gained during the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons.
"We return pretty good experience on both sides, especially the men. Our upperclassmen in Jackson Krieg, Logan Pietrzak, Wyatt Wyman and Ethan Breen will provide good leadership for the men," Cross country coach Brad Butler said. "Our sophomores and newcomers should provide solid depth as Cael Light and Jay Dworak were in our top five last year as freshmen."
Butler continued: "On the women's side, we lost four of our top eight so we will be relying on our newcomers a little more. Erica Barker is our top returner who gained a lot of confidence after big improvements last year. Morgan Dyer, Chloe Loftus and Cassidy Bagby will also be good leaders for our women. We made positive strides in track and look to carry that momentum into this fall. Everyone seems to be having a good summer of training and is excited about the season."
The Trees open the season at Eastern Illinois on Sept. 2 at the EIU Walt Crawford Open before hosting the first of three meets at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course, with the John McNichols Invitational on Sat., Sept. 17.
Following an off weekend, the team travels to Louisville for one of the biggest cross country meets in the nation at the Live in Lou Cross Country Class hosted by Louisville on Oct. 1. The Sycamores will have one final tune-up before postseason action with a preview of the MVC Championship when the team travels to Peoria, Ill. for the Bradley Pink Classic Oct. 14.
ISU will look to make some noise in the postseason in familiar territory as LaVern Gibson will play host to the MVC Cross Country Championships Oct. 28 before Indiana State once again hosts the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championships Nov. 11.
The NCAA National Championships are scheduled for Nov. 19 in Stillwater, Okla.
