A note on which schools are covered in "Local & Other History"
Monday, November 6 2023Ever since I added the "Local & Other History" section of the site, I've long debated on which schools to cover in the non-conference pages. There are various schools that exist outside the borders of McHenry County, but are key parts of the local history of cross country because the Northwest Herald extends into northern Kane County and because the Fox Valley Conference plays a key role in the Herald's focus. The Herald has highlighted athletes from non-McHenry County schools such as Hampshire, Dundee-Crown, Lake Zurich, Grayslake Central, Grayslake North, and Burlington Central, all of which are either current or former members of the Fox Valley Conference and many of which exist well outside NWH's circulation.
When I first added "Local & Other History", I decided that the McHenry County pages would strictly only cover schools that are directly located in McHenry County. However, I have decided to increase the coverage to include Dundee-Crown and Hampshire. I have made this decision on the grounds that their school district extends into McHenry County (both sharing a district with Jacobs) and that their communities are directly covered by the Northwest Herald for more than just their sports.
I partly held off on doing this because I was worried if I became too subjective with what to include it would open the doors for too many other fringe cases and dilute the purpose of these archives. However, I will continue to examine future possible inclusions on a case-by-case basis. I haven't completely ruled out the possibility of including Burlington Central's state history on this site, but I am holding off on that for now.
